REview Process

Our goal for Journal of Mechanical Design (JMD) is to expedite the review of submissions while maintaining a high quality, thorough, and fair review process. Maintaining an expeditious and selective review process ensures that we publish the best papers with the highest impact possible.

Each paper is reviewed by 2-4 reviewers, typically by three. Associate Editors (AEs) recommend an action to the Editor, who then makes the final decision.

The following are recommended time periods for critical review tasks:

  • 5 days for the Editor to assign AE
  • 5 days for AE to assign reviewers
  • 35 days to complete first round of reviews
  • 15-30 days for authors to submit revision
  • 5-30 days to complete revision review
  • 3-7 days for AE to make a recommendation
  • 3-7 days for final decision
  • 7-14 days for author to submit final manuscript files
  • 7 days for final manuscript approval

In total this process generally takes 3-5 months. After this process is completed and all required copyright forms are completed the manuscript will move into production.
