A recording is now available for JMD’s 10th Thematic Session on the topic of Topology Optimization, featuring talks by Satya R.T. Peddada, Levent Burak Kara, Faez Ahmed, and Qian Ye.
The Journal of Mechanical Design is pleased to announce the two (2) winners for the Journal of Mechanical Design 2022 Editors’ Choice Paper Award and one (1) Honorable Mention.
This featured article introduces a self-learning design agent, an innovative approach that doesn’t rely on human data or problem-specific knowledge. Instead, it uses deep learning and tree search to find high-performing and generalizable engineering design strategies.
This featured article shows how interpersonal differences, such as culture or gender difference, between a user and a designer significantly affect designers’ empathic understanding in semiautonomous vehicle development.
In case you missed it, a recording of JMD’s 9th webinar on Emerging Technologies and Methods for Early-Stage Product Design and Development is now available.
The purpose of this special issue is to synthesize the state-of-the-art research on technologies and methods that augment the performance of designers in the front-end of PDD—from understanding user needs to conceptual design, prototyping, and development of systems architecture while also emphasizing the critical need to understand the designer and their role as well.
In our modern world, complex systems such as power grids, transportation networks, and communication systems can be disrupted by both internal uncertainties and external factors like natural disasters. To make these systems more resilient, researchers have been working on design strategies that improve both reliability and recovery capabilities.
What can ants teach us about making better factories? Check out this paper recently published on JMD for a decentralized approach based on simple rules to enable multi-robot cooperative additive manufacturing.
