A Collaborative Effort between ASME’s Design Engineering Division (DED) and Manufacturing Engineering Division (MED)
Following the success of the inaugural 2023 edition, ASME’s Journal of Mechanical Design (JMD) and Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering (JMSE) are pleased to announce Series 2 of the Joint Special Issue on Advances in Design and Manufacturing for Sustainability. This cross-journal initiative is organized under the joint leadership of ASME’s Design Engineering Division (DED) and Manufacturing Engineering Division (MED) to foster collaboration and amplify sustainability-focused research between the design and manufacturing communities.
This special issue seeks to accelerate the publication of high-impact, sustainability-driven research from the ASME community. It provides an opportunity to publish journal-quality papers presented at the Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC), including but not limited to the Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) Track, and at the International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETC) and Computers and Information in Engineering (CIE) Conference, including those from the Design for Manufacturing and the Life Cycle (DFMLC) Conference, Design Automation Conference (DAC), Design Theory and Methodology (DTM) Conference, among others. The issue also welcomes new submissions aligned with the goals of sustainable product and process innovation. Submissions may include research papers, technical briefs, design innovation papers, review articles, and expert view articles, as defined by ASME.
Scope and Topics
We welcome submissions that advance the state of knowledge in sustainable design and manufacturing. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:
- Sustainable design optimization and trade-off analysis
- Design for reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling
- Circular economy strategies for sustainable industrial ecosystems
- AI-driven methods and digital tools for sustainability
- Sustainable manufacturing process innovation and assessment
- Intelligent systems and robotics for sustainable manufacturing
- Experimental or field validation of sustainable manufacturing models and design tools
- Manufacturing systems in energy-restricted environments
- Systems modeling, simulation, and analysis for resilient and sustainable supply chains
- Life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, and decision support frameworks
Conference Participation and Fast-Track Opportunity:
In addition to regular research article submissions, this special issue welcomes submissions of high-quality papers from MSEC and IDETC/CIE which were not published in other special issues for fast-track consideration. Authors of recent MSEC and IDETC/CIE papers are especially encouraged to submit their work.
Publication Target Dates:
- Paper submission deadline: June 1, 2026
- Initial review completed: August 1, 2026
- Final decision by: October 15, 2026
- Publication date: January 15, 2027
Submission Instructions:
Submit manuscripts via the ASME Journal Tool at http://journaltool.asme.org. Designate your target journal (ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering or the Journal of Mechanical Design) based on scope alignment, and select the special issue title “JMD-JMSE Joint Special Issue on Sustainability – Series 2”. Each journal will handle submissions, including those based on conference papers, according to its own editorial policies and review standards. Papers received after the deadline or papers not selected for inclusion in the Special Issue may be accepted for publication in a regular issue.
