Paper No: MD-21-1285 https://doi.org/10.1115/1.4051194
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Qiaode Jeffrey Ge, Professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University, has been appointed by the ASME Design Engineering Division (DED) and the ASME Technical Committee on Publications and Communications (TCPC) to serve as a new Editor in the area of mechanisms for Journal of Mechanical Design (JMD), effective from January 2021, for 5 years.
The “Editor for Mechanisms” is a newly created position to further improve the quality and impact of JMD publications by enhancing the technical editorial leadership in the areas related to mechanisms. Over the past 20 years, JMD has continued to expand, evolving from the Journal of Mechanisms, Transmissions, and Automation in Design with a focus on mechanism theory and machine design, to its current broad scope covering a wide range of topics in engineering design research. Today, JMD has the largest number of annual submissions (close to 1000) among all ASME Journals, covering eight diversified topics in (1) design automation, (2) design of direct contact systems, including cams, gears, and power transmission systems, (3) design education, (4) design of energy, fluid, and power handling systems, (5) design innovation and devices, (6) design for manufacturing and the life cycle, (7) design of mechanisms and robotic systems, and (8) design theory and methodology.
Professor Ge’s new role complements my continuing role as Editor-in-Chief, provides additional expertise and leadership in mechanism related fields, and enhances the journal’s ability to create new initiatives and reach out to the international communities and researchers who work on these topics.
Professor Ge is a world-renowned expert in the field of mechanism and robotics who previously served as an Associate Editor for JMD (2003–2006) in the area of mechanisms and robotics before the Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics (JMR) spun off from JMD. After the spinoff, he became one of the first AEs for the newly created journal (2010–2016). In addition, he served as an AE for the International of Mechanics Based Design of Structures and Machines (2010–2016) and served on the Editorial Board of the International Edition of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (2010–2015).
Professor Ge also has significant experience in working with international research communities in mechanical system design. He was the ASME Liaison with IFToMM (International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanisms and Machine Science) from 2012 to 2016 and Chair of the US Member Organization of IFToMM (2012–2016). He was appointed as a member of the Constitution Committee of IFToMM (2015–2019) and elected as its Chair in 2020 for a 4-year term.
In addition to journal editorial boards, his service to ASME includes DED Executive Committee (2015–2021), Chair of ASME Mechanisms and Robotics Committee (2010), several awards committees within ASME DED, and conference and program chairs within IDETC/CIE.
Professor Ge is a highly respected leader in his field, and I feel very fortunate that he has agreed to serve in this role. Together with the Editorial Board, we welcome him back to JMD and look forward to working closely with him to bring the journal to the next level of excellence.Copyright © 2021 by ASME
