Authors should reference the topics and keywords below to determine if their manuscript is within the scope of the journal. It is highly recommended that authors consult upcoming and recent issues of the Journal and include citations to relevant publications in their manuscript. This helps to place the manuscript within the context of other work and helps to maintain the high reputation of the journal. Citation format must follow the ASME guidelines. It is ASME policy that a research paper should not exceed 9000 words or the equivalent of nine journal pages. Manuscripts are reviewed using archival scholarship standards, see Reviewers.
ASME does not provide language editorial services therefore correct use of English language text is the responsibility of the authors. Reviewers and editors will assess language quality. Papers that do not meet the language quality standards of JMD cannot be published, independently of scientific merit. Authors are encouraged to engage professional editorial services as required. The ASME Style Guide is available here.
Questions can be directed to an appropriate member of the Editorial Board or the Technical Editor. Authors should review past Editorials to get a better idea of current JMD interests.
The Journal of Mechanical Design uses ASME's online submission site, Journal Tool, to manage submissions.
Title and Abstract
The paper title of the work should be concise and definitive, and should be provided in upper and lowercase letters: This is How a Paper Title Should be Typed. Additionally:
- Prepositions and conjunctions of four (4) or more letters should be uppercase: e.g., With, From, That, Which, Until, About, Through, but, and, is, the, an, be, for.
- Special terms should be provided as they are known or understood by the industry. This includes acronyms, abbreviations, computer program names and codes, units of measure, etc.
- If the paper you are submitting was published in ASME conference proceedings and therefore has a unique paper number, e.g., DTM-2003-546, include this number in parentheses at the end of the paper title.
The paper abstract should be 150-200 words long using only text with Latin characters (no special characters, Greek, or math symbols). The purposes of the abstract are: (1) To give a clear indication of the objective, scope, and results so that readers may determine whether the full text will be of particular interest to them; and (2) To provide key words and phrases for indexing, abstracting, and retrieval purposes. The abstract text should be organized to include the following categories in the order noted: Background, method of approach, results, and conclusions.

Journal Scope - Topics
The following were identified in December 2008 as topics which are particularly relevant to the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design. Any questions can be directed to an appropriate member of the Editorial Board or the Technical Editor.
Topics:
- Design automation, including design representation, virtual reality, geometric design, design evaluation, design optimization, risk and reliability-based optimization, design sensitivity analysis, system design integration, ergonomic and aesthetic considerations, and design for market systems
- Design of direct contact systems, including cams, gears and power transmission systems
- Design education
- Design of energy, fluid, and power handing systems
- Design innovation and devices, including design of smart products and materials
- Design for manufacturing and the life cycle, including design for the environment, DFX, and sustainable design
- Design of mechanisms and robotic systems, including design of macro-, micro- and nano-scaled mechanical systems, machine component, and machine system design
- Design theory and methodology, including creativity in design, decision analysis, design cognition, and design synthesis.
Article Keywords
Authors should select several relevant keywords for their manuscript submissions. They should also identify keywords in areas in which they are comfortable reviewing papers. Authors are encouraged to register as volunteer reviewers in the ASME Journal Tool and add their areas of expertise using these keywords.| agent-based design alternative energy system design approximation-based optimal design belt drives cam design capstone design courses cognitive-based design collaborative design compliant mechanisms compliant mechanism synthesis computational kinematics computational geometry computer-aided design computer-aided engineering conceptual design continuously variable transmissions creativity and concept generation decision theory decomposition-based design optimization design automation design courses and curricula design education design evaluation design for assembly design for disassembly design for humans design for the environment design for manufacturing design for market systems design for X design methodology design of experiments design of innovative devices |

Ethics Standards
ASME has a comprehensive set of guidelines for the ethical obligations of authors [here]. JMD adheres strictly to these guidelines. Some more thoughts and guidance can be found in the JMD November 2008 Editorial: Recycling and Republishing.
Suggesting Reviewers
Authors are encouraged to suggest a list of 3-5 names of potential reviewers for their submitted paper. They can do this by sending an email directly to the Associate Editor (AE) assigned to their paper, as soon as the Technical Editor makes this assignment. AEs may or may not use these reviewers at their discretion.
Manuscript Templates
Templates to assist in properly formatting manuscripts for review and publication are available. These are not maintained by the Companion site and are provided solely as a convenience for authors.
LaTeX users can use the template and BibTeX sytle files here (created by ASME for all ASME journals).
